A Valiant Way To Spend Time Away From Your Career

More and more I'm seeing posts online about volunteering and it's not just aimed at the general public, but those that are currently unemployed. I believe it's a fabulous idea. Of course, I'm a proponent of volunteering and being involved with responsible charitble causes employed or not - there are so many benefits both to you as well as the receipients.

An Interview with a Recruiter

For this article, I interviewed Elizabeth Lalli-Reese, from Starr Tincup in Fort Worth, by asking her some questions I thought job-seekers might be curious about. I figured it would be a refreshing change to get to see from an actual recruiter’s perspective. Elizabeth Lalli-Reese has over ten years experience in Human Resources and Talent Acquisition. The following is the very informative conversation we had.

Me: “When I submit my resume as a job-seeker, why do I not always get a response email in return?”

Making the Most of Your LinkedIn Profile

Personally, I think LinkedIn.com is the best way to start networking for a job, but I also think it's a good way to stay fresh and in touch with former colleagues. It's the one site that I mention to everyone asking for my advice as a recruiter.

This particular post will be exceptionally short because I really want to point you to another site created to help you out with your job search and how to make the most of your photo on LinkedIn.

What do we really need to know about working with recruiters?

The Necessity of a Good Online Presence

Until very recently, I never knew how important having a strong online presence is in regards to finding a job. Of course people are not born under rocks; you have probably heard the term, but I don’t think most people know just how vital it is. Here’s the thing . . . having an established online presence is important because companies are increasingly using the internet to find employees. In fact, I would say it is their primary method. So, if you want a job from a company, then make yourself available and easy to find wherever the company is looking.

75 reasons you didn't get the job

Wondering why you didn’t get the job? It was probably because:

You can find that on our website. Please stop wasting my time.

Everyone knows they'll be expected to answer a series of questions in a job interview. It is equally important to be prepared to ask good questions. The interviewer will expect it, and I recommend having them outlined in advance so that nothing is forgotten or overlooked. And, it never hurts to show that you spent time thinking through this important meeting! The interviewee is typically invited to ask questions near the end of the discussion. Following are some questions you may want to ask during your interview:

Hiring Managers Finding Candidates Without Job Boards

If you've spoken to any recruiter in the last six months it's very likely that they shared with you a growing trend. There are simply more candidates than jobs.

While in the past recruiters used the big job boards like Monster, Career Builder and others to tell candidates about job openings, many of these same folks shy away from them in today's economy. The reason that they do this is because every time they post a job they are flooded with resumes by the hundreds and yes, sometimes the thousands.

The importance of body language in an interview

You have 10 - 20 seconds to make your first impression, and 93% of it is nonverbal. Your body language is critical in interviews.

The Balance of Rest vs. Work: Your Layoff Action Plan

So you’ve just been laid off. You have your old granola bars, family photos, and magazines from 2006 in a Staples box. You’ve vented, you’ve probably cried, and you’ve broken the news to family and close friends. You may have even tried to start the process of receiving unemployment. Part of you- the worried, apprehensive part- tells you to start the job hunt RIGHT NOW. Not tomorrow, not next week. You must find a new job RIGHT NOW.
